May 18th is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD). Today we say thank you to the scientists, doctors, health professionals, donors and members of the general public who have made the search for a safe and effective vaccine their top priority.
A vaccine for HIV is important for obvious reasons; it’s one of the sure fire ways to stop HIV in its tracks. Since African-Americans and Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV their participation in vaccine trials is key.
Here are some things you should know about the vaccine trials:
- You can’t contract HIV from the investigational vaccine
- HIV negative adults in good health between the ages of 18-50, of all ethnic backgrounds are eligible to participate.
- Being in a vaccine trial program won’t necessarily prevent you from contracting HIV if you have unsafe sex or use dirty needles.
