FOR LIFEBEAT’S #MUSICFIGHTSAIDS CAMPAIGN

IN HONOR OF WORLD AIDS DAY (DEC 1)

 

Major music artists and over 100 music venues nationwide join effort

to raise awareness  of sharp rise in HIV among young people Ages 13 -24

 
New York, NY (November 19, 2013) –  In honor of World AIDS Day, December 1st, the biggest names in the music and media industry are joining Lifebeat, Music Fights HIV/AIDS to draw urgent attention to the dramatic rise in HIV among young people.

Since its inaugural benefit concert in 1992 with the Pet Shop Boys and Salt-N-Pepa to its 2013 MTV Video Awards Pre-Party with Robin Thicke and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lifebeat has been on the front lines of rallying the music industry to educate young people that AIDS is a preventable disease.
 
On November 29th, Lifebeat will kickoff #MusicFightsAIDS, a multifaceted nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness of the sharp increase in HIV among young people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 1,000 young people ages 13-24 are newly infected with HIV each month in the U.S. alone, an increase of nearly 20% from previous reports. Even more troubling is that an estimated 60% of young people with HIV have never been tested, are not being treated, and may unknowingly be spreading the disease.
 
As part of the campaign, artists including CHVRCHES, Macklemore, Carl Cox, 3LAU and others will encourage their fans to participate in the #MusicFightsAIDS campaign via social media, while media companies like MTV, SiriusXM, Spotify, Billboard Magazine, Village Voice, Zuus, Beatport and Traxsource will donate digital, print and broadcast space. Viacom and Walgreens will display messages in support of #MusicFightsAIDS on nine jumbo screens in the heart of New York City, reaching more nearly 2 million people every day.
 
In addition, Lifebeat has partnered with numerous music venues nationwide, including New York City’s Best Buy Theater, Los Angeles’ SupperClub, and Miami’s LIV, to provide concert and club-goers with free condoms and essential information on how to prevent HIV infection and transmission. Participating music venues in New York City alone include Brooklyn Bowl, Bowery Ballroom, Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Cielo, Irving Plaza, Pacha, Output, Le Poisson Rouge, Roseland Ballroom, Terminal 5, Beacon Theatre, and XL. “#MusicFightsAIDS is a call to action by and for people who live and breathe music,” said Gary Dell’Abate, President of Lifebeat and the well-known producer of The Howard Stern Show. “In honor of World AIDS Day, the music industry and other partners will use their megaphones to encourage young people to practice safe sex, get tested, and help us work towards an AIDS-free generation.”

World AIDS Day is the day set aside to remember the 32 million people who have died, and the 34 million people currently living with HIV/AIDS.
