You’ve been taking tests all your life, right? From the minute you are born you’re being tested to make sure you’re healthy; ready to be promoted in school or at work and so on. Some tests demand an immense amount of studying and others simply require showing up. Lucky for you, getting an HIV test falls into the latter category. On June 27th, join thousands of Americans as they get tested on National HIV Testing Awareness Day.

Why’s it a good idea to get tested for HIV?
Well, it’s always good to know your status. One in five people who are HIV-positive aren’t aware of their status. If you test negative for HIV, the health professional administering your test will provide you with information and tools to keep yourself and your partner(s) HIV-free. If you’re positive it’s not the end of the world; you’ll be provided with information to prevent the spread of the disease and treatment options. It’s been proven that early and consistent treatment, coupled with a healthy lifestyle leads to a longer life; less health complications and a lower risk of transmission to your partner(s).

Does testing hurt and can I contract HIV?
Gone are the days of cringe-inducing needles. Preliminary HIV tests can be done with a quick finger prick or oral swab. There’s no way you can contract HIV from an HIV test. Finger prick and oral swab tests come in fresh packaging that’ll be opened right in front of your eyes.

How long does testing take?
If you’ve got about 20-30 minutes to spare – and we’re sure you have the time – you can be counseled and tested for HIV. Even if you don’t think you’re at risk for the disease it’s a good idea to get a feel for the process.
