18th Annual NYC Unfolds Street Fair – July 23rd

Saturday, July 23rd marks the International AIDS Project Initiative’s (IAPI) 18th annual NYC Unfolds street fair. The fair meshes the best of New York City street fair ambiance with an HIV/AIDS awareness message. NYC Unfolds is IAPI’s largest fundraiser of the year. Hundreds of vendors will be in attendance along with several HIV/AIDS related organizations. AREA, God’s Love We Deliver and Lifebeat will distribute prevention, awareness and support materials. Portions of IAPI’s quilt will also be available for viewing. Funds raised at the fair support several programs in the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa; panels from these regions will be on display.

Lifebeat at NYC PrideFest – June 26th

Pridefest NYC 2011 was Lifebeat’s biggest and best Pridefest to date. LGBTQers, family and friends from near and far were out in full force, right on the heels of Marriage Equality for residents of New York. It was a beautiful day filled with fabulous people loving life and reveling in being themselves. It seemed as if the streets were brighter and filled with a ridiculous amount of glitter, feathers, cha-cha heels, leather and of course, rainbows!

Hearts & Voices and 92.3 Now joined with PrideFest to host StageFest. A wide variety of performers — many of which are regular contributors to Hearts & Voices — took the stage and delighted the audience. Even Hearts & Voices manager Erika Banks belted out a few notes. There was something for everyone. Many parade-goers stopped by and stayed for a while. Here are a few of the many acts they saw:

Pridefest NYC 2011 was also an exciting year for Lifebeat’s Local Tour Outreach program. National Outreach and Programs Manager, Kizzy-Kay Graham and dedicated outreach volunteers distributed safer sex goodie bags with One brand condoms, Lifebeat condom packs, NYC condoms, Wet brand lube, FC2s, comics, candy, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention information and more from our new tent. More than 170 people signed up join Lifebeat’s mailing list and traded HIV/AIDS facts for the opportunity to win an MTV Moon Man or Lifebeat branded water bottles. We’ll be announcing the names of the winners of the Wet Basket of Fun and Wet Holiday Basket at the end of the month.

On Tour: Ricky Martin Gives You M.A.S

On April 9th, Lifebeat struck out on tour with internationally renowned vocalist Ricky Martin. Martin’s Musica + Alma + Sexo World Tour takes the sexy crooner from his native Puerto Rico, to Canada and all the way across the pond to several European countries including Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy. Before Ricky hits Europe he has multiple dates from the East to West coast of the United States.

This is not the first time Ricky Martin has used his talents to benefit Lifebeat. We’ve been on tour with him before; he’s donated autographed and one-of a kind items to Lifebeat’s Bid 2 Beat AIDS auction and most recently, hosted a meet and greet for fans.

We’ve enlisted the help of local AIDS service organizations (ASO) and community-based organizations (CBO) to bring the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention to a venue near you! Martin is a class act; Lifebeat and our ASOs/CBOs are thrilled to be on tour with Ricky.

Microbicide gel may prevent HIV infection in women

Scientists may be one step closer to preventing the spread of HIV infection in women. A vaginal gel containing the drug tenofovir (Viread) was shown in a clinical trial to reduce a woman’s risk of acquiring HIV during sex.

The research is an important step in protecting women from HIV infection, particularly in areas where women lack the social power to insist on the use of barrier protection such as condoms.
