"What I like most about volunteering with LIFEbeat is getting to meet the people I'm helping. Once at a concert with a younger teen audience, a mom started arguing with me about giving condoms to kids. We ended up talking for twenty minutes about her 14-year-old son and how nervous she was about him. She left with each of our informational pamphlets and a condom to discuss with him at home. She ended up thanking me!"

Education and Outreach

LIFEbeat's Tour Outreach Program began in 1992 when Johnette Napolitano of the band Concrete Blonde approached LIFEbeat with the idea of distributing condoms on their tour.  Since then, the program has grown tremendously with each year.  LIFEbeat supplies club and concert-goers with safer sex materials and lifesaving HIV/AIDS prevention information at music venues nationwide.

LOCAL OUTREACH

Through our Local Outreach Program, LIFEbeat staff and volunteers reach hundreds of thousands of at-risk youth annually in clubs and concert venues throughout the New York Metropolitan area, including:

In addition, LIFEbeat provides safer sex materials and information to the following venues:

In an average month, LIFEbeat's New York volunteers alone distribute more than 14, 000 condoms and pieces of HIV/AIDS awareness literature to young music fans.

NATIONAL OUTREACH

On a national level, artists invite LIFEbeat to be a part of their tours, enabling the organization to cast a wide net and reach a large and diverse number of young people.  Artists who have supported LIFEbeat in this way include Godsmack, Britney Spears, Counting Crows and John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Jay-Z, Tina Turner, Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Moby, OutKast, Sarah McLachlan, and Destiny’s Child.  At each venue, LIFEbeat reaches out to local AIDS service organizations (ASO's) to assist in providing concert-goers with important HIV/AIDS literature, condoms, and information on testing and counseling services in their area.

In addition, many artists also donate a portion of each ticket sold on tour.  Funds raised help support youth HIV prevention programs.
